How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a prominent part as your furnace prepares to work in your house.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board starts running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking multiple times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will tell you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
